As cancer diagnoses rise and treatment centers like Duke Cancer Institute continue to grow, so does the need for compassionate, affordable housing for patients and their families. At SECU Caring House, every night matters — and every room represents a place of rest, resilience, and refuge during one of life’s most difficult journeys.
To meet the increasing demand, we are expanding.
Our Goal

The current Caring House facility consistently operates at full capacity. While we do all we can to accommodate every guest in need, we are forced to turn away approximately 75 patients each month due to a lack of available space. These are individuals navigating cancer treatment who deserve a safe, affordable, and supportive place to stay.
Our expansion will ensure that more patients — regardless of financial means — can access the healing environment that defines SECU Caring House.
Our Capital Campaign supports the construction of a second home on the current property.
This new building will:
Double our capacity,
allowing us to serve twice as many patients and families
Include 17 additional guest rooms with private bathrooms, and 6 suites for stem cell and bone marrow transplants
Feature communal kitchens, gathering spaces, and outdoor areas designed to foster connection and comfort
Provide flexibility to accommodate long-term and short-term stays
Maintain the same atmosphere of warmth, dignity, and care that defines our current home
