Giving Back, Springing Forward

Debra, a mother of seven, has spent her life caring for others. Even during her
own battle with Salivary Gland Carcinoma, she found ways to give back. Following her diagnosis, Debra traveled to Duke for treatment, knowing the 33-day round trip would be exhausting. She first saw Caring House as a place to stay, but it became so much more. “This feels like a family; at a hotel, I wouldn’t have interacted with anyone.” That sense of family came to life when she hosted a cookout for the house, bringing warmth and community to one of the first nights of spring.

Debra’s daughter, Rebecca, joined her, wanting to care for Debra as she had always cared for her. Together, they found comfort in the community. “Until you experience cancer, you don’t know what it’s like,” Rebecca said. “We discovered a community of people sharing
a similar journey. It inspires us to help others.” The peaceful environment at Caring House
gave Debra space to heal, and the positivity of the community uplifted her.

“Everyone here is in good spirits— this situation needs positivity, and Caring House provides that.” For families like Debra’s, Caring House isn’t just a convenience—it’s a lifeline, providing the comfort and support they need to continue their fight.
